California state Sen. Aisha Wahab won a special election Thursday to fill the remainder of former Rep. Eric Swalwell's term in California's 14th Congressional District, defeating fellow Democrat Melissa Hernandez with 53.1% of the vote to Hernandez's 46.9%.

Wahab's victory makes her the first Afghan American to serve in Congress. She previously made history in 2018 as the first Afghan American elected to public office in the U.S. when she won a Hayward City Council seat.

Outside groups with ties to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee spent millions opposing Wahab. AIPAC's super PAC, United Democracy Project, spent roughly $2.5 million, while Bold America spent about $1.8 million to support Hernandez and oppose Wahab.

At a candidate forum, Wahab said she considered events in Gaza a genocide and has called for cutting U.S. military aid to Israel. Hernandez said Israel had the right to defend itself following the October 2023 Hamas attack but that "the destruction into Gaza has gone too far."

Swalwell resigned from Congress in April amid allegations of sexual assault and misconduct, which he has denied. Federal agents seized electronic devices from Swalwell at the San Francisco airport and later searched his Washington, D.C. home as criminal investigations continue.
