A Salmonella Javiana outbreak tied to jalapeño peppers from Sinaloa, Mexico has sickened 431 people across 32 states, hospitalizing 57. The FDA traced the contamination to a single grower supplying Coast Citrus Distributors, and both Chipotle and QDOBA pulled the peppers once notified. The recall is underway and the importer has cut ties with the grower, so the public health system worked exactly as it should.
Gutting the FDA and CDC by 20% and 25% respectively has left Americans dangerously exposed to foodborne illness outbreaks that a fully staffed government could catch earlier. FoodNet now tracks only two pathogens instead of eight, a Traceability Rule that would help identify contaminated supply chains has been pushed to 2028, and the team coordinating food safety with Mexican counterparts was eliminated entirely. Weakening the very systems designed to protect the food supply is a policy choice with real consequences.
