Life in prison is the right call for Hui Ka Yan. Evergrande’s massive fraud, bribery and hidden liabilities wrecked trust, property rights and market order. Confiscation, fines and restitution put public losses ahead of billionaire impunity.

A life sentence for Hui Ka Yan is no substitute for facing China’s property bust. Evergrande’s $300 billion debt blew up after years of overborrowing, weak oversight and reliance on real estate growth. Punishment cannot fix a crisis rooted in the whole system.
