The Spin

The life sentence handed to Evergrande's Xu Jiayin is exactly what large-scale financial fraud deserves — billions in fines, all personal assets confiscated, and political rights stripped forever. Between 2016 and 2021, Xu ran a sustained scheme inflating assets, concealing liabilities and looting financial institutions through bribery. The punishment fits the scale of damage caused to China's market economy and the public.

Xu Jiayin's life sentence obscures the bigger story — Beijing's own crackdown on developer borrowing in 2020 is what triggered Evergrande's collapse and dragged China's entire real estate market into crisis. Evergrande carried over $300 billion in debt because the system enabled it, and punishing one man doesn't fix an economy still dangerously dependent on real estate for growth.
