The Spin

Murder is not activism, and dressingno itgrievance upwith asthe onehealth doesn'tcare makesystem itjustifies sokilling a man. The Thompson family deserves justice, and Mangione's guilty plea is a step toward getting it. SentencingHis sentence now must reflect the full weight of thisthe crime. Mangione accepted responsibility, yet the system is prosecuting him twice for the same act — that's a clear double jeopardy violation under New York law. Years of debilitating pain and a broken health care system pushed him to a breaking point that thousands of Americans recognize. The state charges must now be dismissed; punishing the same conduct twice isn't justice, it's overkill.

This federal guilty plea may not end Mangione's legal fight. Even if double jeopardy blocks the state murder trial, Manhattan prosecutors could still pursue the separate state weapons charge and seek a consecutive sentence — potentially giving them another bite at the apple after seeing what sentence Judge Garnett imposes federally.
