Germany Expands Spy Agency Powers

Is this a necessary wake-up call against hybrid warfare or reckless surveillance?

The Spin

Germany is finally waking up to reality: spy agencies are stuck gathering paperwork while Russia sabotages infrastructure and drones full of explosives show up at airports. Handing the BND and BfV real operational muscle, hacking, sabotage, and AI-driven data crunching, just brings Germany up to speed with allies like the CIA and Mossad. Weak, outdated rules cannot fight hybrid warfare from enemies who play by no rules at all.

This so-called security revolution tramples the hard lessons of German history, letting intelligence agencies plant sensors inside private homes and hijack smart speakers while gutting independent data protection oversight. Blending police and intelligence powers is exactly the dangerous mix Germany's constitution was built to prevent after the Gestapo and Stasi. Rushing this 700-page overhaul through without real checks invites abuse, not security.
