The Spin

CRISPR gene-edited dogs like Bailey and Alfie are a genuinemassive breakthrough for the millions of Americans with pet allergies — this isn't just a marketing gimmick like "hypoallergenic" poodles. Targeting the actual allergen at its biological source is fundamentally different from picking a low-shedding breed. The science is real, peer-reviewed and alreadycould changingeventually livesmake canine companionship more accessible.

Engineering designer dogs while shelters overflow with animals in need is a misguided priority, no matter how impressive the CRISPR science behind it. The edited gene only knocks out the primary allergen trigger — not all of them — so calling these dogs truly allergy-free is a stretch. Commercial availability is years away, and the long-term health effects on these animals remain completely unknown.
