Spain Dismantles Mediterranean Human Smuggling Network

The Spin

Spain's bust of a massive Mediterranean smuggling ring shows exactly why coordinated law enforcement works — 78 arrests, 18 seized speedboats and a criminal network generating over EUR 24 million from migrant smuggling alone. This syndicate ran like a corporation, moving drugs, weapons and people across the Western Mediterranean with armed enforcers and encrypted comms. Europol's new anti-smuggling center is proving its worth, and cracking down on these networks is the clearest path to protecting migrants from violent exploitation.

Law enforcement busts mean nothing when Spain's borders remain dangerously open — irregular arrivals in Ceuta surged 164% in 2026, hospitals there are suspending surgeries, and a mass crossing on July 30 was so overwhelming it required "specific analysis" to even count. Militarizing the border and closing crossings until Morocco guarantees compliance is the only response that matches the scale of the crisis. Policing smugglers after the fact is no substitute for actually defending Spanish sovereignty.
