The Paramount-WBD merger is a landmark win for consumers and the entertainment industry, creating a powerhouse with 15,000+ film titles, elite sports rights and a streaming platform built to rival Netflix. The UK's clearance on both competition and public interest grounds proves this deal strengthens — not weakens — the marketplace. With $6 billion in projected synergies and commitments to 30 theatrical films annually, this merger is exactly the kind of bold investment Hollywood needs right now.

The UK clearance only came after Paramount made legally binding concessions on programming, news independence and children's content — hardly a ringing endorsement of the deal as structured. Meanwhile, 12 state attorneys general have sued to stop the merger, arguing it will kill competition in film and television, and the deal is on pause until at least June 1, 2027. Soft box-office numbers and a 22% drop in ad revenue at WBD raise serious doubts about whether the promised synergies will ever materialize.
