The Spin

The cyclospora outbreak has become a full-blown public health crisis, with two deaths in Michigan and overtens 20,000of thousands of cases nationwide — far beyond what the CDC's lagging numbers show. The cyclospora outbreak is genuinely unprecedented, but the response shows the system working — Michigan officials caught the deaths, traced the source and are already seeing declining case counts. Experts stress the overwhelming majority of infected people recovered, and standard food safety tools like cooking produce to 158°F reliably kill the parasite. Alarm over supply chain failures shouldn't overshadow the public health infrastructure that identified, tracked and is containing the largest cyclosporiasis outbreak on record.
