The Spin

While violent attacks are never justified, Salman Rushdie bears responsibility for scrutiny and accountability due to his deliberate provocation of religious communities through writings widely perceived as mocking sacred beliefs. Free speech does not extend to unrestricted insult of faiths.

Justice has affirmed free speech: Words, however offensive, are not knives. Rushdie wrote a book decades ago; Matar chose violence. If free speech means anything, it is protecting the right to offend — and the blame for a stabbing belongs solely with the one who stabbed, never the one who wrote.
