This comes as police found Haase hiding on a rural property in Puyehue, in the southern region of Los Lagos, on Saturday, after he spent nearly three years on the loose following a final Chilean Supreme Court ruling on the case.

A popular folk singer-songwriter and Communist Party member, Jara was arrested at age 40 along with Quiroga on Sept. 12, 1973, the day after the ousting of socialist President Salvador Allende. They were tortured and killed, and their bodies were found on Sept. 16, 1973, in a field near the Metropolitan Cemetery.

Haase, now 80, joined the army's Tejas Verde in 1972, a regiment whose leader Manuel Contreras later became the head of Augusto Pinochet's secret police Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional (DINA). In September 1973, he was serving as a lieutenant at the small sports facility where Jara was held.

Chile's Supreme Court sentenced seven retired military officers, including Haase, in August 2023 to 25 years and two days behind bars for the kidnapping and killing of Jara and Quiroga. At the time, all of them were aged between 73 and 85 and free.
