The FDA's 90-day deferral ban on gay and bisexual blood donors is rooted in outdated science, not actual risk — every unit donated already gets rigorously tested for HIV and other bloodborne diseases. With the Red Cross declaring a national blood crisis and supplies at a decade-long low, turning away willing, healthy donors based on sexual orientation is indefensible. Donor eligibility must be based on individual risk factors, not identity.
The Red Cross has paid nearly $15 million in FDA fines for blood-safety violations and faced fraud investigations tied to Hurricane Katrina and Haiti relief funds — this is not an organization that deserves blind public trust. Expanding the donor pool means nothing if the institution managing that blood has a documented record of mismanagement and regulatory failures. Real reform starts with accountability, not just more donors.
