The Spin

The Atlantic route from West Africa to the Canary Islands is a death trap, and 144 people dead or missing off Mauritania proves it. A boat from The Gambia drifted for 25 days after running out of fuel, leaving only 38 survivors — including two children who lost every family member on board. Expanding education and economic opportunity in origin countries is the only real fix.

Even with a 61% drop in Canary Islands arrivals, migrants keep dying on the Atlantic route because dangerous crossings haven't stopped — they've just shifted farther south and grown deadlier. More than 5,000 migrants died reaching Spain by sea in just the first five months of one recent year, the highest daily death toll on record. Tighter EU-backed border controls are pushing people onto longer, more fatal journeys.
