The Spin

Ortega's decision to end elections in Nicaragua is the final step in cementing a family-run dictatorship. The regime has already jailed and exiled top opposition figures, extended its own presidential term and now plans laws to permanently bar any political rivals from participating. This isn't governance — it's a regime so afraid of its own people that it had to abolish the vote to survive.

The Sandinista government is defending Nicaragua's sovereignty against decades of foreign-backed destabilization, not dismantling democracy. The 2018 unrest was a U.S.-funded coup attempt that left blood in the streets, and new laws are simply a firewall against repeat interference. Protecting the revolution's gains — free education, housing for the poor, national peace — demands shutting the door on parties that serve foreign powers.
