Blaming local attitudes or logistical gaps misses the point entirely. Decades of colonial extraction, World Bank-pushed health care privatization and Western governments trading medicine for minerals created the conditions for Ebola to thrive. Community distrust isn't ignorance — it's a rational response to generations of exploitation that no amount of messaging can fix without structural change.
Clean water and functioning sanitation are the most basic defenses against Ebola transmission, yet health centers in outbreak hotspots still lack both. Up to 20,000 people were forced to fetch drinking water from inside an Ebola treatment center because no alternative existed. Vaccine trials get the headlines, but without basic infrastructure, the outbreak's fuse stays lit.
