Measured concentrations were so high they matched wastewater influent levels, strongly pointing to contamination from medical equipment during the procedure itself. Until these gaps are addressed, the alarm over microplastics and heart disease is getting way ahead of the actual evidence.
Microplastics found in carotid artery plaque were linked to a 4.5-fold higher risk of heart attack, stroke or death — and that's after adjusting for standard cardiovascular risk factors. The plastics triggered measurable inflammation inside the plaque itself, confirmed through multiple detection methods including electron microscopy and stable isotope analysis. Dismissing this as contamination ignores a rigorous, prospective, multicenter study that followed 257 patients for nearly three years.
