The event, detected by instruments deployed just two months earlier, caused the valley floor to sink roughly four meters and the two sides of the ridge to separate by more than one meter, with up to 160 million cubic meters of lava erupting onto the seabed.

The observatory, known as OHA-GEODAMS, consisted of more than 20 instruments including hydrophones, acoustic beacons and pressure gauges deployed across a 100-kilometer segment of the ridge between the Antarctic and Australian tectonic plates.

Researchers found that most fault movement during the event occurred aseismically — silently, without generating strong seismic waves — with earthquakes accounting for only 10 to 20 centimeters of roughly two meters of total fault displacement.

Lead author Jean-Yves Royer said the measured horizontal displacements of two to four meters were equivalent to 30 to 60 years of continuous spreading, and that the instruments will continue gathering data on the seafloor until 2027.
