The Spin

Anti-migrant protesters in South Africa have crossed a clear line by targeting journalists, seizing cameras and using social media to identify reporters as enemies. The March and March movement has fueled violence, forced thousands of migrants to flee and risks damaging South Africa's human-rights and regional solidarity reputation. Blaming immigrants for unemployment and crime without evidence while attacking the press isn't patriotism; it's vigilantism dressed up as nationalism.

South Africa's immigration crisis is real — more than 100,000 deportations and 500,000 people turned away at the border in two years show the system has been overwhelmed. The answer is stronger lawful enforcement, notpaired mobwith violence, real andaccountability for the stateyears mustof prosecutepolicy anyonedrift whothat incitesgot orthe carriesnation out attacks on foreign nationalshere. Economic reform, sustained job creation and a more capable government remain the only lasting solution, and that work must move faster to restore public confidence.
