The Spin

Anti-migrant protesters in South Africa have crossed a clear line by targeting journalists, seizing cameras and using social media to identify reporters as enemies. The March and March movement has fueled real violence — people have been killed, thousands of migrants have fled, and documented foreign nationals are being terrorized alongside undocumented ones. Blaming immigrants for unemployment and crime without evidence while attacking the press isn't patriotism; it's vigilantism dressed up in nationalist language.

South Africa's immigration crisis is real — over 100,000 people deported and 500,000 turned away at borders in two years proves the system has been overwhelmed. The answer is stronger lawful enforcement, not mob violence, and the state must prosecute anyone who incites attacks on foreign nationals. Economic reform, jobs and a capable government are the only lasting fix, and that work has to move faster.
