A hostage standoff at a Chase Bank building in downtown Bakersfield, California, stretched into Wednesday morning after a man barricaded himself inside with several people around 1 p.m. Tuesday. Two hostages had been released by Tuesday night after negotiations.

The FBI assumed control of the scene late Tuesday and its Hostage Rescue Team was present. The Department of Homeland Security also responded alongside local police to assist with the standoff.

Negotiators secured the release of the first hostage around 5 p.m. Tuesday and a second around 9 p.m. Bakersfield police Sgt. Eric Celedon said those still inside the building remained "in good health."

Police said the suspect appeared to have a bomb strapped to his body. Authorities did not confirm whether an explosive device had been verified, and no injuries or fatalities were reported.

The Chase Bank building at Chester Avenue and 17th Street also houses a student services center for the Kern County superintendent of schools. A JPMorgan Chase spokesperson said the branch on the ground floor was empty.

City Hall, police headquarters and several other government buildings were placed on lockdown as a precaution. A large section of downtown Bakersfield was closed off, with road closures between Truxtun Avenue and 18th Street and between Chester Avenue and H Street.
