UK Refers Teen Rapists' Lenient Sentences to Appeal

These sentences are a slap in the face to rape victims everywhere. Three boys committed horrific attacks, filmed them and shared the videos online — and walked free with rehabilitation orders. The attorney general was right to refer these sentences to the Court of Appeal, because letting rapists avoid custody sends a devastating message that victims' suffering simply doesn't matter.

Juvenile justice exists for a reason — these were children, not adults, and the judge was legally bound to prioritize rehabilitation over punishment. The court acknowledged the gravity of the crimes while recognizing that peer pressure, cognitive impairments and very young ages are factors the law requires judges to weigh. Reflexive outrage shouldn't override a carefully reasoned sentence designed to prevent future harm.
