Is U.K. engagement with China a necessary economic strategy or a dangerously incoherent gamble?

The Spin

Engaging with China is a must, especially as it drives a third of global economic growth, supports 370,000 British jobs and is the U.K.'s third-largest trading partner. The government's approach, therefore, which seeks to cooperate where possible but tackle threats head-on, is the strategy Britain needs to deliver secure growth, while standing up for the national interest.

The government's rush to reset ties with Beijing is a serious mistake. Simultaneously, Starmer is attempting to court Chinese investment while trying to limit Beijing's footprint in its critical infrastructure, a contradiction that is certain to undermine trust with Washington. What Britain truly needs is a proper plan and a decoupling from China's economic grasp.
