UK healthy life expectancy has hit a record low, falling two years over the past decade — and the gap between rich and poor areas is now a staggering 20 years for women. Deprived communities see people entering ill-health during working age, well before retirement. Bold action like extending the sugar tax and minimum alcohol pricing is urgently needed, yet the government's response remains far too timid for the scale of the crisis.
The real driver of Britain's health collapse is the junk food industry, which spends millions hooking children on products that cause obesity, cancer and heart disease. NHS obesity costs have ballooned to £6.5 billion a year, and weight-loss drugs only treat symptoms. Taxing junk food manufacturers and cracking down on predatory marketing tactics is the only serious path to fixing public health.
