Spain and Brazil's historic summit in Barcelona marks a turning point for global progressive leadership, with both nations signing agreements on innovation, the economy and digital transformation while standing firm against war and authoritarianism. The IV Meeting in Defense of Democracy brings together 30 leaders to defend multilateralism and push back against disinformation and extremism. This is what principled, coordinated international leadership actually looks like.

The Barcelona summits are a carefully staged media spectacle designed to boost Sánchez's international profile while he drowns in domestic corruption scandals and lacks a parliamentary majority. Dressing up partisan political theater as diplomacy — with populist leaders in tow — doesn't make it statesmanship. Bilateral agreements that are broad and underdeveloped don't justify the fanfare of three simultaneous forums built around opposing one foreign leader.
