The Spin

The 2026 World Cup is shaping up to be a human rights disaster, with ICE raids, mass deportations and travel bans turning what should be a global celebration into a climate of fear. FIFA's promise of a safe, inclusive tournament rings hollow when host cities like Dallas, Houston and Miami are actively partnering with ICE. Fans, players and communities deserve better than a tournament built on repression.

The 2026 World Cup faces undeniable human rights challenges across all three host nations, yet there is still time to course-correct before the tournament becomes a stage for repression. FIFA and host governments must urgently close the gap between lofty promises and ground-level reality — only four of 16 host cities have even published human rights plans. Football belongs to the fans and communities, not to governing bodies raking in record revenues.
