The Xi-cc-plus is the first particle identified following upgrades to the LHCb detector completed in 2023, and only the second baryon with two heavy quarks ever observed. The discovery was presented at the Rencontres de Moriond Electroweak conference.

Researchers detected the Xi-cc-plus by observing its decay into three lighter particles during proton-proton collisions in 2024, recording around 915 events at a mass of 3,619.97 MeV/c². The result carries a statistical significance of 7 sigma, above the 5 sigma threshold required for a discovery.

The University of Manchester played a leading role in the LHCb detector upgrade, with Professor Chris Parkes directing the UK contribution for over a decade. Manchester scientists designed and built silicon pixel detector modules assembled in the university's Schuster Building.

Prof. Tim Gershon of the University of Warwick said the upgraded detector allowed scientists to find the particle "after only one year, while we could not see it in a decade of data collected with the original LHCb." Gershon is set to take over as LHCb international lead in July.

The discovery comes as UK Research and Innovation faces criticism over plans to cut £50 million in funding for the LHCb's next upgrade. Chi Onwurah, chair of the Commons science committee, described the cuts as "wholly unacceptable" in a letter to UKRI and the science minister.
