The Spin

Russia's shadow fleet is a reckless sanctions-busting operation that's now threatening one of the most biodiverse stretches of ocean on Earth. The Arctic Metagaz — a crewless, powerless wreck carrying 60,000 metric tons of LNG — is drifting toward Italian and Maltese shores, and a spill could cause irreversible ecological damage to marine life, fishing and tourism. Letting sanctioned Russian tankers roam international waters unchecked has real consequences.

Ukraine's drone strike on the Arctic Metagaz has created an "imminent and serious" ecological disaster in the heart of EU maritime space, and nine European nations are now scrambling to deal with the fallout. A 900-foot ghost ship packed with LNG and diesel is drifting toward Malta — a destination that welcomed four million tourists in 2025 — with no crew and a gaping hole in its hull. Attacking commercial vessels in neutral waters has consequences that go far beyond the battlefield.
