Hungary Vetoes EU Economic Proposals on Ukraine

Hungary Vetoes EU Economic Proposals on Ukraine

Was this a betrayal of Hungary's neighbor or was the country right to use leverage in this situation?

The Spin

Hungary continues to take European money and reap the benefits of EU membership all while undermining European unity and solidarity with Ukraine. Upon every round of sanctions, Hungary acts the same. Unless Orbán and his government reconsider their behavior, it is time for the EU to take serious action and remove Budapest's voting rights and funding altogether.

By blocking the resumption of gas supplies to Hungary, not only is Ukraine attempting to blackmail the country into supporting its forever war against Russia but it is hoping to raise energy prices and create disruptions ahead of Hungarian elections. Unfortunately for European ideologues, Hungary's resolve will not break in protecting its economic security.

Metaculus Prediction

There's a 5% chance that Hungary will leave the EU before 2030, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
