The tariff reduction from 32 percent to 19 percent represents a major diplomatic victory achieved through tough personal negotiations. This deal positions Indonesia among the lowest-tariffed nations in Asia and strengthens its global trade standing right after securing a European Union free trade agreement. The agreement marks the beginning of a new golden age for the U.S.-Indonesian alliance.

A 19 percent tariff on Indonesian goods isn't a deal at all when Indonesia pays nothing on American exports. Americans now face protectionism and higher prices while Indonesians enjoy free trade and lower costs. The numbers are actually worse than the original Liberation Day tariffs.
