Federal prosecutors argued that Routh planned the assassination for months, demonstrated willingness to kill anyone in his way and expressed no remorse. A psychiatric evaluation concluded Routh had Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Bipolar II, though prosecutors said these diagnoses did not justify leniency.
