Disney's board voted unanimously to appoint D'Amaro, who currently oversees a division with $36 billion in annual revenue that includes theme parks, cruise vacations and consumer products. The Experiences unit supplied roughly 60 percent of Disney's profit last year.

The succession process was managed by James Gorman, the veteran Wall Street banker who was recruited to serve on Disney's board in 2024. Gorman led the succession planning committee after the company's previous CEO transition ended with Bob Chapek being ousted in 2022.

Dana Walden, who currently oversees Disney's television and streaming units, has been named president and chief creative officer effective March 18. Walden was widely viewed as one of the other top contenders for the CEO role alongside D'Amaro.

D'Amaro has overseen Disney's $60 billion investment plan to expand theme parks over the next decade, including new attractions and a planned theme park in Abu Dhabi. The domestic parks unit saw record quarterly revenue in the three months ending Dec. 27.

Iger will transition to serving as senior advisor and board member until his retirement from the company on Dec. 31, 2026. Iger previously served as Disney's CEO for 15 years from 2005 to 2020 before returning in November 2022 after Chapek's departure.
