Hypocritical Republicans — who coincidentally aren't suing Texas to change its unfair maps, which weren't voted on by the people — are desperately moving goalposts and erasing voices because they can't win fair elections. California's new congressional maps were drawn by an independent citizens' commission through a transparent, public process. Voters see through Republicans' cynical tactics and won't be fooled anymore.
California's legislature passed race-based gerrymandered maps that violate the Constitution and disenfranchise 40% of the population. These illegal maps will taint upcoming elections if allowed to stand. States cannot draw congressional districts based on race, no matter what political party controls the process. The Trump DOJ is doing great work protecting Republicans living in mismanaged blue states.
All this gerrymandering by both political parties is eroding democracy nationwide. Democracy can't be saved if everyone in power is attempting to suppress the voters. It's time for a better way forward — independent commissions that draw districts rather than letting politicians choose their voters.
There's a 30% chance that Republicans will hold the most seats in the U.S. House of Representatives after the 2026 elections, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
