Speaking to investors at its earnings call for Q2 2025, SoftBank CFO Yoshimitsu Goto said the decision had “nothing to do with NVIDIA itself,” but suggested SoftBank needed to divest the funds to reallocate them to the bank’s commitment to invest $30 billion in OpenAI.

Separately from NVIDIA, SoftBank sold 40.2 million shares in T-Mobile for $9.17 billion, as well as $2.4 billion worth of Deutsche Telekom shares. The bank also increased the size of its margin loan backed by Arm Holding shares by $6.5 billion to $20 billion in total.
