The Spin

NCHIs serve a crucial protective function in communities that allow the police to identify dangerous patterns before they escalate into actual violence. This tool, developed in response to the inquiry into Stephen Lawrence’s murder, is designed to prevent future hate crimes. Eliminating this system will remove a safeguard that protects vulnerable groups from escalating harassment.

The Metropolitan Police’s decision to end NHCI investigations is a victory for free speech following years of suppression and countless ruined reputations. Even with the progress made, the police must take more action to eliminate the scourge of NCHIs from our society. This process must begin by suspending NHCI recording and renewing focus on tackling the real crime.
