Bolton has been a vocal Trump critic, and this investigation was previously closed by the Biden administration. It's well known that Bolton is on a lengthy list of perceived enemies kept by Patel, and Trump has often spoken publicly about prosecuting those who've opposed him and his actions. This sure smells like the weaponization of law enforcement.

Metaculus Prediction

There's a 31% chance that the DOJ will announce an investigation or prosecution of a Democrat who served as president, vice president, congressional leader, whip or impeachment manager before Jan. 1, 2026, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
