This is a landmark ruling for the Everglades and is a huge relief to the millions of Americans that believe this wilderness ought to be protected. It also sends a clear message to the highest rungs of the U.S. government that they cannot simply ignore environmental laws and that there are consequences for ignoring them.
It was well known that this judge, appointed by former President Barack Obama, would overstep her authority in an attempt to overturn President Donald Trump's immigration policies, despite the huge mandate he acquired at the last election. Just this week, another judge ruled that the Southern District doesn't have jurisdiction over the site so the state is appealling and looks forward to overturning the decision.
There is a 50% chance that the average number of noncitizens removed annually from the U.S. for fiscal years 2026 through 2028 will be at least 461,000, according to the Metaculus prediction community.
