It's unacceptable that police did nothing to prevent and stop clashes, especially as Chilean fans went to Avellaneda to wreak havoc in a crowded stadium. Due to police inaction and previous attacks from away fans, Independiente supporters came in to attack Universidad de Chile fans.

It's certain that police inaction was a key factor leading to this disgraceful incident, but one should never play down the responsibility of Independiente fans. After all, there are plenty of videos showing the cruelty of unruly supporters as they lynched the remaining away fans.
