While the deal sounds impressive, it's essentially Apple paying a premium to secure supply chains that should have been diversified years ago. The $500 million commitment won't fundamentally change America's rare earth dependence overnight, and consumers may ultimately bear the cost of this expensive domestic sourcing strategy.
