Officials said that crews responded to a fire at Canfield Mountain, just north of Coeur d'Alene, after receiving reports of a blaze at around 1:21 p.m. local time on Sunday. Reports of gunfire emerged around 40 minutes later.

An update from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office roughly five hours later said that SWAT teams discovered the body of a deceased male with a firearm nearby. He was yet to be identfied and it was not yet clear whether he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or from an exchange of gun fire.

In a press conference later in the evening, Sheriff Bob Norris said the individual is believed to have been the only shooter and there was no ongoing threat. Earlier, he said the man was using a "high-powered" rifle and was "well prepared" for the terrain. "This was a total ambush. These firefighters didn't have a chance," he added.

Though the "shelter in place" order was lifted late on Sunday, police warned residents to take care as there was still an active wildfire.
