The approximately 700 U.S. Marines set to be deployed to Los Angeles within 48 hours to combat anti-ICE protests will have the power to temporarily detain protestors, according to U.S. defense officials.&nbsp;

U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) confirmed that the Marines had completed a "pre-deployment work-up" that included "de-escalation, crowd-control, and understanding the Standing Rules for the Use of Force (SRUF)," with added "legal and law enforcement expertise."

USNORTHCOM confirmed that while Marines cannot conduct civilian law enforcement, they can temporarily detain an individual in "specific circumstances" under Title 10, such as preventing an assault, until they can be transferred to the custody of appropriate law enforcement authorities.

The details follow a motion filed by Gov. Gavin Newsom to "prevent the use of … active duty Marines for law enforcement purposes on the streets of a civilian city," arguing that the Marine deployment would violate state sovereignty and the Posse Comitatus Act.&nbsp;

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell, however, told CNN that the role of the Marines and National Guard was "still not clear" to local law enforcement and that he would seek further clarification from Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman, the commander of Task Force 51.

In the meantime, anti-ICE protests have spread to at least 37 cities across 21 states since Friday, with demonstrations reported in Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Seattle, Denver, and Spokane, resulting in at least 565 arrests nationwide.
