The Facts

  • US Pres. Donald Trump didn't back down on his ambitions of taking control of the Gaza Strip amid a visit from King Abdullah II of Jordan to the White House on Tuesday.

  • King Abdullah has voiced disagreement with Trump's plan to resettle the Palestinians of Gaza in both Egypt and Jordan, but Trump on Tuesday went further than previous remarks, stating that the US would not "buy" Gaza, as he previously suggested, but would rather simply "have it."

  • "We don't have to buy, there's nothing to buy," Trump said. "It's a war-torn area, we're going to hold it, we're going to take it… Gaza the way it is, civilization has been wiped out in Gaza. It's going to be a great economic development."

The Spin

The usual critics are deriding Trump for his out-of-the-box thinking to bring a long-sought solution to the situation in Gaza. However, it's the most humane option available and might for once bring peace to this region of the Middle East.

For the Palestinians of Gaza, the enclave is their home and 18 months of war have not dissuaded from wanting to remain on their homeland. Trump has no right to tell the people of Gaza where they should live and his plans to move them would amount to ethnic cleansing and forcible displacement.
