Venezuela's presidential election could have ripple effects throughout the Americas

The US has formally recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González as the country's president-elect, as per Secretary of State Antony Blinken's social media.

Posting on X, Secretary Blinken stated "The Venezuelan people spoke resoundingly on July 28 and made [Edmundo Gonzalez] the president-elect. Democracy demands respect for the will of the voters."

In July, Venezuela's electoral authority announced that Nicolás Maduro had won a third term as the country's President. Opposition parties have contested that González won approximately double the amount of votes as Pres. Maduro, and has González claimed he was forced to concede the election in order to flee to Spain.

The US had previously accused Pres. Maduro of election fraud, but had not labelled González President-elect. Following the 2018 Venezuelan election, the Trump admin. chose to recognize Juan Guaidó as the country's interim president in 2019.

Responding to Secretary Blinken's comments, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil described the US official as a "confessed enemy of Venezuela," described González as a "Guaidó 2.0," and accused the Biden admin. of "trying to reverse Venezuelan democracy."
