Police Battle Gangs Attempting to Seize Haitian Capital

On Tuesday, police and residents successfully fought off an overnight attempt to attack the wealthy hillside neighborhood of Petion-Ville, a suburb of the capital Port-au-Prince. In the morning, the bodies of over two dozen suspected gang members were lying dead in the streets.

Residents mobilized self-defense groups, some armed with machetes and hammers, barricading the streets and requesting non-neighbors to leave, in an effort to protect the district from armed gangs attempting to break in and take over the residential area.

According to police spokesperson Lionel Lazarre, at 2 a.m. on Tuesday, authorities halted trucks suspected of transporting gang members. Police gunfire killed ten gang members, and self-defense groups assisted in tracking down the remaining ones.

Weapons such as Kalashnikov rifles were seized by the police. Reports indicate that in the neighborhoods of Delmas, Canape Vert, and Petion-Ville, residents have incinerated the bodies of at least 25 suspected criminals using burning tires.

The attack followed the most recent political crisis, in which the governing presidential council removed the prime minister and appointed a new one, the third this year.
