An Israeli strike killed Hezbollah's chief spokesperson Mohammed Afif in central Beirut on Sunday. Israel said that he "wielded significant influence over Hezbollah's military operations" and "glorified and incited" attacks against Israel.
Hezbollah confirmed the death a few hours after the strike was reported. Afif, a significant figure in the group, was one of Hezbollah's few remaining public faces. Lebanon's health ministry said that the strike killed four people and wounded 14 others.
The strike comes as some progress toward a cease-fire in Lebanon has reportedly been made, though the situation is still unclear. US special envoy Amos Hochstein is expected in Beirut on Tuesday following reports that Hezbollah had a "positive" response to a US-backed proposal.
