Alan Jones, for years one of Australia's biggest radio personalities, as well as a former head coach of the country's rugby team, was on Monday arrested on charges of sexually abusing eight people.

The 83-year-old was taken into police custody from his Sydney apartment at around 7:45am local time following a "long, thorough, protracted" investigation, police said. They conducted a search of his home and seized electronic devices, they added.

At the Day Street police station in central Sydney, Jones was charged with 24 offences. They included 11 counts of aggravated indecent assault where the alleged victim was under the authority of the alleged offender, nine counts of assault with an act of indecency, two counts of sexually touching another person without consent and two counts of common assault.

Police said the alleged offences took place between 2001 and 2019 and included alleged victims that either knew Jones personally or professionally, while others had met him for the first time. One of the alleged victims was aged 17 at the time of the offenses, police further stated.

Police further credited the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper for its 2023 report on Jones' alleged behavior, which it said generated "energy" to bring the cases to court.

Jones was released on conditional bail and is due in court on Dec. 18. Outside the police station, Chris Murphy, one of his lawyers, denied the charges against him.
