A man apparently killed himself on Brazil's Three Powers Plaza, a square connecting key government buildings in Brasília, on Wednesday in what authorities have called an attempted bombing attack on the country's top court.

This comes as two blasts were heard at the scene at around 7:30 p.m. The first took place in a parking lot near the Supreme Court and the Chamber of Deputies, and the latter in the Three Powers Plaza.

The incident took place at the Plaza of the Three Powers, an iconic square connecting Brazil's three branches of federal government, The Plaza of the Three Powers was previously the site of significant unrest on January 8, 2023, when supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed and vandalized government buildings.

The timing of the explosions has raised security concerns as Brazil prepares to host the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, followed by Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to Brasilia.
