Where Do Candidates Stand on US Support for Ukraine?

On Monday, two sources told Reuters that President-elect Donald J. Trump has chosen Republican Representative Mike Waltz as his national security advisor, an important role that will update the president on national security concerns and coordinate with government agencies.

With multiple combat tours in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and Africa under his belt, Waltz is a 50-year-old veteran, having served as an Army Green Beret and a Colonel in the National Guard. Since entering Congress in 2018, heâ€TMs emerged as a vocal critic of China.

Recognized as a China hawk, Waltz serves on the House China Task Force, aiming to limit the influence of the Chinese Communist Party. He has also stated that he is skeptical of giving Ukraine more aid as it fights Russia's invasion and would like to see the war come to an end.

As Mr. Trump is moving fast to fill his foreign policy and national security team, on Monday sources indicated he had
 decided on Florida Senator Marco Rubio for Secretary of State, but cautioned that this could change.

Before selecting JD Vance as his vice presidential nominee, Trump considered Rubio, a foreign policy hawk who wants to reestablish American leadership throughout the world while being strong on China and Iran. The Florida senator predicted in a recent interview that the Ukraine-Russia war would end "with a negotiated settlement."

If elected, Rubio would become the nation's first Latino Secretary of State, having been born to Cuban exiles. The Republican Jewish Coalition responded enthusiastically to the news, emphasizing Senator Rubio's longstanding support for Israel.
