UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has appointed Jonathan Powell – Downing Street chief of staff between 1997-2008 under Tony Blair – as his new national security advisor.

In a statement released by the Cabinet Office, Starmer stated that Powell had "devoted his career to protecting the interests of the country," while Powell himself commented that he was "honoured" to assume the role.

Powell, 68, helped negotiate the 1998 Good Friday Agreement in Northern Island, and recently had acted as special envoy for negotiations – overseeing the return of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

Alongside his ten years as chief of staff, Powell has worked for a total of 17 years in the Foreign Office. Powell will now leave his position as chief of executive of UK-based international conflict charity Inter Mediate, to assume his new role in Downing Street.

The UK's previous national security adviser, Tim Barrow, had held the role since 2022 and was scheduled to be replaced by Gen Gwyn Jenkins under former Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Following Starmer's election victory this summer, the decision was cancelled.
