The combination of greenhouse gas emissions and El Niño weather patterns has pushed 2023 to become the warmest year in 125,000 years of recorded history.

Climate-related disasters in 2023 included devastating floods in Libya, severe South American heatwaves, and Canada's worst-ever wildfire season, which burned over 18.4 million hectares.

Scientists have documented temperature anomalies across all regions, including Antarctica, which experienced its most intense heatwave on record in 2022.

Despite countries setting ambitious emission reduction targets, global CO2 emissions reached a record high in 2022, with current policies projected to increase warming by 2.4C.
